A boating accident in the Manasquan River Friday resulted in the death of one person and left two others clinging for life.
According to officials, a 15-foot skiff and a 25-foot Boston Whaler traveling in opposite directions collided in the inlet between Point Pleasant and Brielle. Local boaters say they rushed to help after the distress call came in around 7 p.m.
Despite the quick response, 24-year-old Kyle Tanis, of Mahwah, was killed in the collision. He was one of five passengers on the smaller vessel. Two others on that boat were left seriously injured, while the men aboard the larger boat were not hurt.
Experienced boaters say the current in the inlet can be very strong and may have contributed to the collision.
