One person is dead following a police-involved shooting in Hackensack Thursday.
Bergen County prosecutors say three officers were dispatched to 10 Temple Ave. at around 1:30 p.m. for a welfare check of a person who was on parole. They say two officers entered the home and that's when Elvin Diaz, 24, confronted them with a kitchen cleaver. Prosecutors say at least one of the officers fired in response.
The two officers and Diaz were taken to Hackensack University Medical Center, where Diaz later died from injuries sustained during the shooting. The officers were not injured.
Friends say Diaz was in jail as recently as December. They say he lived in the home with his mother and brother and that his mom was home at the time of the shooting.
