A group of students from Yeshiva University came to Jersey City Tuesday to pay their respects one week after a deadly attack at a Jewish grocery store.
The students that are in the group are from all over the world, according to Rabbi Jonathan Shippel.
“There are students here from Morocco and America and from France and from Panama and from Israel,” he says.
The targeted attack happened Dec. 10 at the JC Kosher Supermarket on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. Three people inside the store were killed. The two suspects were gunned down after a lengthy standoff with police officers. The pair were also accused of killing Jersey City Police Detective Joseph Seals in a confrontation earlier that day, as well as a taxi driver in Bayonne a few days prior.
“We’re bringing safety. We’re bringing love, happiness and merit,” says student Rafael Minsky as he paid his respects.
The building next door to the supermarket houses a Jewish prayer center and a yeshiva. The students at that yeshiva resumed classes on Monday. Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop has said he believes the shooters had planned to attack the school as well.
“This could have been another Sandy Hook,” Fulop said.
Mourners have placed signs, flowers and other mementos outside the grocery store as a memorial.
The Yeshiva University students say that they will also visit the family of Mindy Ferencz, one of the victims in the shooting.
