Security increased at schools across New Jersey following threats
Officials have called for increased security at schools across New Jersey after a series of copycat threats in the wake of the Florida school shooting.
Nutley students saw an increased police presence when they returned to class on Monday. The school was shut down on day before their winter vacation due to a perceived threat posted on social media. The student who allegedly made the post has been banned from the school.
In Ocean County, the Point Pleasant Beach police chief told parents that an armed officer will be at schools there moving forward.
“We felt the need is now, the time is now and I made a decision to put an officer in the high school, the elementary school and we have a Catholic school here, St. Peters,” said Chief Joseph Michigan.
South Brunswick school and police officials held a public forum on how they would be protecting students. Police patrols were already increased after the Florida shooting.
The South Brunswick police chief says that his officers are working to reassess the physical security inside and outside of the schools.
"Obviously school shootings has escalated emotions, not just emotions, but brings up things that matter to them,” says Superintendent Scott Feder. “[Parents] want to know kids can come to school and feel safe, and we want the same… We have ideas, and we want share what we can and to hear from them. "
Parent Kristin Romanok says that she brought her 13-year-old daughter Samantha to the forum to help reassure her.
“So she can hear from police and superintendent that they have a plan,” Romanok says.
Other school districts will be holding similar forums, including Monroe, Nutley and Howell.
