Authorities in Sayreville are searching for a couple who stole two kittens from an animal shelter.
Amy Ray, the manager at Animal Rescue Force, which shares a facility with Sammy’s Hope Animal Welfare and Sayreville Animal Hospital, said in her 40 years of working at the shelter, she has never had someone walk off with an animal.
Ray said she actually helped foster the two stolen kittens: 8-week-old Berkeley and 10-week-old Maggie. She said the shelter was busy Saturday when the couple walked in and the man asked a volunteer for help.
Ray said that’s when the woman went into another room, asked to hold one of the kittens and then quietly slipped out while everyone else was distracted. The kitten was discovered missing Saturday night.
The couple reportedly came back Sunday and went through the same scenario to take the second kitten, Ray said.
Surveillance video from a nearby business showed the couple driving a black 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix with a Pennsylvania license plate.
Ray said the cost of an adoption is about $100, with medical expenses included.
Sayreville police are investigating the incident, but no arrests had been made as of Tuesday morning.
