Paterson woman accuses officer of roughing her up
A Paterson woman charged with threatening and assaulting a police officer has hit back at police, saying she?s the one who was roughed up.
Damiana Baez, 22, was arrested last Wednesday after police were called to 395 East 27th St. to resolve a landlord-tenant dispute. Home surveillance footage shows Baez, who is the landlord?s daughter, enter into a verbal exchange with Paterson Police Officer Charles Cobb.
The video then shows Baez try to walk away as Cobb apparently pushes her against a chain link fence. Baez is on the ground less than 10 seconds later as the officer appears to drag her to his cruiser by her sweatshirt.
Baez claims the cruiser?s door hit her in the head when the officer opened it. The entire exchange lasts about 21 seconds.
There is no audio on the tape.
The woman was arrested for allegedly striking Officer Anthony Petrazzulo with an open hand. She is also accused of threatening Cobb with a knife, as well as unlawful possession of the weapon.
Lt. Anthony Traina, a Paterson Police Department public information officer, confirms Baez has filed a complaint. He says the department is collecting physical evidence and verbal testimony as they investigate the incident.
Baez is due back in court to answer her charges on Nov. 12.
