League of Municipalities discusses Gov. Christie’s future at meeting in Atlantic City
The League of Municipalities gathered in Atlantic City Wednesday to discuss the future of the Garden State, as well as what's next for Gov. Chris Christie.
The 101st meeting took place about a little more than a week after the state announced a takeover of Atlantic City due to financial issues.
Some of the state's former governors discussed if Gov. Christie would be leaving office early to take a position in Donald Trump's presidential administration.
"The problems in the state are almost insurmountable, and I think it's very clear he'd like to get out of here as soon as possible," says former New Jersey Gov. Jim Florio.
Gov. Florio says that he would advise the governor to avoid any Trump position that came with a U.S. Senate confirmation because of the controversy surrounding Bridge-Gate.
"That would be a very distasteful process I suspect," Florio says. "He's between a rock and a hard place."
Gov. Christie has not elaborated on if or when a resignation could happen. He previously said that he plans to stay on as governor, but would consider a position with Trump.
If Gov. Christie does resign, Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno would take his place. Senate President Steve Sweeney would then step in as the second-in-command.
"I haven't done any research to even think about it to be honest with you," Sweeney says.
League members also discussed ways the public can regain trust in politicians. Some experts says that Trump, who has never held an elected office, won the election because voters were tired of career politicians.
Gov. Christie did not attend the league meeting. He was attending the Republican governors conference in Florida.
