'Goodfellas' actor takes up cause to save racehorses
Actor Paul Sorvino, known primarily for his work in ?Goodfellas? and ?Law and Order,? has taken on a new role ? a savior for aging race horses.
Sorvino joins his daughter in going to bat for slowing horses, 100,000 of which are slaughtered each year, according to the Humane Society of the United States. European and Asian demand for horsemeat, considered a delicacy, can even lead champions to the chopping block.
?Thirty-seven percent of the horses that you see get slaughtered,? Sorvino says. ?As soon as they don?t run fast, they?re gone.?
To combat this, the 69-year-old actor and ex-New Jersey resident transformed his eastern Pennsylvania home into a racehorse rescue operation called Gray Dapple Farm.
?It?s a beautiful place,? Sorvino says. ?This is heaven for these horses, are you kidding??
If Paul Sorvino is dedicated to the cause, his daughter Amanda is passionate about it. The actress, screenwriter and self-described ?horseshow brat? says she learned about the equine world?s dark side at an early age, and the thought of killing the animals makes her sick.
?Just because they?re not human doesn?t mean they can?t feel betrayed,? she says.
