Flood warning issued for Ramapo River communities
A flood warning was issued for river communities along the Ramapo River Wednesday night.
The National Weather Service says the warning is in effect until Friday morning. Forecasters predict water levels of between 6.5 and 10.5 feet high. Officials say flooding could occur from the overflowing Pompton Lake, releasing water into the Ramapo River, which is already at a high level.
Pompton Lakes residents Rosemary and Chris Baker say they are upset by the recent flood warnings and they blame the new dam system at work in upstream communities.
The dam is a Department of Environmental Protection project. The North Jersey District Water Supply Commission, which oversees the dam, says the gates are faulty. The commission says flood control is not one of its responsibilities. The group says it?s just following the formula designed by the Army Corps of Engineers.
Residents say they want better monitoring of the dam and gates as well as a flood warning system in place. They say the river can rise in minutes and then it?s too late to take precautions.
Pompton Lakes? new mayor says she is trying to get answers on how to get the problem fixed.
