The New York Yankees say shortstop Gleyber Torres has tested positive for COVID-19 despite being fully vaccinated and previously having the virus.
Torres was placed on the COVID-19 injured list prior to Thursday night's game.
Torres sat out Wednesday's game. Miguel Andújar was called up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre as a corresponding move.
"Certainly unexpected," says Yankees GM Brian Cashman. "I think everyone, MLB, in charge of the testing is looking into that and the variants that could be out there."
A statement says Major League Baseball, medical experts and the New York state Department of Health are advising and assisting the team amid additional testing and contact tracing.
