A woman was injured Wednesday after a sheet of ice flew off another vehicle on I‑295 in the Bordentown area, smashing her windshield and causing a head wound.

Cara Mercadante of Doylestown, Pennsylvania, said she was driving north on I‑295 around 9:50 a.m. when the ice struck her car. She was able to pull over until EMS arrived to provide medical care.

“I was close enough to see the sign for Exit 57 Bordentown when hit, and the ambulance later got me there,” Mercadante said in a social media post.

The ice crashed through her windshield and hit her in the head, requiring 34 stitches.

“I’m truly lucky it wasn’t worse and to be alive,” she said.

Mercadante believes the ice came from the roof of a dark blue or gray SUV, possibly a Toyota 4‑Runner. She is asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has dashcam video to come forward.

She also thanked first responders and urged drivers to clear snow and ice from their vehicles after storms.

According to a New Jersey State Police Facebook post earlier this week, state law requires drivers to remove snow and ice before driving.

“Before you hit the gas, grab the broom,” the post said. “Clear all snow and ice from your entire vehicle — including the roof. What comes off your car could turn into someone else’s emergency.”
