The entire Clinton Township School District was closed Monday due to widespread cases of the flu.
All four schools, including Round Valley, the Clinton Middle School, Spruce Run and Patrick McGaheran were closed Friday as well because too many students were out with the flu or other stomach issues.
"We have been in discussions with our district physician, the county offices and the Department of Health. Although the NJ State Health Department is not recommending closure, we feel that this step is in the best interest of our students,” said Superintendent Michele Cone in a statement.
All of the schools are being thoroughly cleaned, according to officials.
Parent Heidi Grumbridge tells News 12 New Jersey that Round Valley and Spruce Run each had 200 students out sick. The middle school had 150 absentees.
"If they're going to go in and clean it there, at least it’s going to give the kids a chance to get over their illnesses,” Grumbridge says.
The superintendent says that the large number of absent students was also affecting instruction. The schools are expected to reopen Tuesday.
