Residents were buried in as much as 15 inches of snow after a major winter storm pounded New Jersey Monday.
While accumulation varied, the average snowfall was about 7.8 inches throughout the state. A winter storm warning was placed in effect across the state until 6 p.m. The cold weather may have caused the death of at least one elderly person. The body of an 87-year-old woman was found on the roof of Brookside Senior Center in East Orange. It is believed the woman wandered out onto the roof and froze to death.
Dropping temperatures and the wind chill made for frigid conditions as night fell, with temperatures diving down toward single digits.
Hundreds of schools in the state were closed Monday due to the storm.
The weather conditions created treacherous road conditions for drivers across the Garden State. Those who must be on the road are urged to use caution and allow extra time to get to their destinations.
