A wheelchair-bound elderly man was caught in a crossfire and killed in Newark Wednesday night, police say.
According to investigators, the 70-year-old man was shot in the chest outside an apartment in the Stephen Crane Village on Franklin Avenue. The victim's name has yet to be released as police are searching for his relatives.
Residents living with disabilities were frightened by the news of the elderly man's killing.
"It's frightening because you can't run, you can't escape," says Joan Warnock, who has spent the last seven years in an electric wheelchair. "No matter which way you look at it, you're not safe."
Warnock is not alone. Kim McCoy, who gets around with the help of a cane, says she does her best to stay out of trouble.
"I know there is a little drug activity going on around here, but you know, I just mind my business and that's what [you've] got to do."
So far, no arrests have been made in the shooting.
