Crews continued repairs on a water main break beneath Route 1 in Edison on Tuesday night.

The break occurred Monday morning at the point where four pipes intersect under the highway.

“It is obviously very freezing, frigid, brutal conditions to be working in,” Mayor Sam Joshi said.

Route 1 North remained closed as of Tuesday night. Southbound lanes were mostly getting by. Officials said that the left lane on the southbound side remained closed.

Joshi said four valves need to be installed, and that two are already in place. Once all four are in, the water flow can stop, and the leak can be repaired.

NJDOT will then ensure the roadway is safe to drive on, Joshi said, who noted that the road sank about three to four inches.

Homes and businesses had not lost water, though pressure may fluctuate as repairs continue.

Traffic remains the biggest impact as thousands of drivers use Route 1 through Edison each day.

Crews believe the break was caused by the cold weather affecting a pipe that is at least 75 years old.

“This is something that we anticipate because of the fluctuating temperatures. This week is going to be rough for not just Edison but for across the state,” Joshi said.

News 12 has reached out to find out when repairs would be complete, but did not hear back.
