A Perth Amboy police officer is being called a hero after he saved a man who was about to be struck by a train.
Officer Kyle Savoia was called to the area for reports of a man down on the train tracks. Perth Amboy police released footage from the officer’s body camera.
The video shows Savoia running toward the man and waving the train down. The train stopped and the man was able to get out of the way with moments to spare.
"I was thinking to myself what happens if I was a minute later to that call? I would've never been able to beat that train there, so it just happens to be I was there at the right time,” Savoia said.
The man is heard on the video thanking the officer over and over again.
"What I was most proud of Officer Savoia was how quickly he reacted, because as soon as he recognized something was wrong he started running,” said Chief Roman McKeon.
Savoia was just sworn in as a police officer this January. His late father served as an officer for 28 years and his grandfather served for almost 40 years.
