Car owners in Sussex County are fuming mad after several people reported finding spikey objects deliberately left on their driveways in order to damage their car tires.
Vernon Township police say that there have been at least 10 incidents in the past two weeks where homeowners reported the spikes left on their property. Chief Daniel Young says the spikes are being purposefully placed in the path of vehicles mostly from farms or rural homes with long driveways.
Young says that the vandal is using three different types of “tire deflation devices.”
“They’re obviously homemade. This one’s more of a barbed wire-style. This one is Styrofoam with screws sticking out. This is a little more advanced [and made of metal]. They’re putting time into building them,” he says.
Jane Wiley tells News 12 New Jersey that her father found two of them at the end of the driveway of their horse farm. She says that he saw them before he ran them over.
“Because of the fact that we found different types, to me, it’s almost like they’re trying to figure out which one is the best, which one’s going to do the most damage,” she says.
Many township residents say that they are worried about the farm animals in the area who may come across these items.
“This isn’t like puncturing a tire. Especially those sheet metal ones. If a horse stepped on that, it would be a big problem,” Wiley says.
Similar incidents have been reported in Wantage and nearby Warwick, New York. Investigators say that they believe the incidents are connected.
Anyone who finds one of these objects on their driveway or street should contact their local police department before they touch it.
