A 31-year-old man is facing charges after being accused of punching two Newark police officers on Friday.
According to Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé, the officers responded to a report of a man with a gun on Clinton Avenue around 5 p.m.
When officers detained a man who fit the description of the suspect, Fragé says a large crowd gathered around the officers. He says a man in the crowd struck both officers with closed fists, injuring them both, before fleeing the scene.
Officials say Khalil Cuttino, of Phillipsburg, was in the crowd and is accused of slugging the officers with a closed fist before running away. He was arrested Sunday and faces two counts of aggravated assault on police officers and obstruction of the administration of the law.
The two injured officers were transported to University Hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries and are reportedly in stable condition.
