Recently released surveillance video helped an Essex County jury convict a man dubbed as the ?Birthday Killer? Monday.
Arthur Tiggs was convicted of first-degree murder by a jury that took two days to reach its verdict. The video shows Tiggs talking with his friends at the Cave Lounge in Newark. He was celebrating his birthday at the club when he said he wanted to ?push someone.?
?He said he had a vision for his birthday that he wanted to quote ?push someone,?? Assistant Essex County Prosecutor Paul Bradley said. ?Push is a street term for shoot. [His friends] didn?t take him seriously, but within two minutes of that he carried out his wish.?
Tiggs shot and killed 27-year-old Lance Pettiford, of Newark, a stranger he picked at random.
While the video helped the jury to convict Tiggs, it was the testimony of witnesses that helped police and prosecutors make their case. Pettiford?s mother, who never missed a court date, is grateful for those who testified to convict her son?s killer.
Tiggs is scheduled to be sentenced in August.
