Attorney General Anne Milgram announced an 11-count indictment against Democratic Assemblyman Joseph Vas Wednesday in connection to alleged corruption during his time as Perth Amboy?s mayor.
Vas faces charges of bid-rigging, misappropriation of expense funds, conspiracy and official misconduct.
The prominent legislator has served the 19th District since 2004, where he sponsored 22 ethics bills and championed corruption reform. He has served as deputy majority leader since last year.
The corruption allegations stem from Vas? tenure as mayor of Perth Amboy. He held that seat for nearly two decades prior to his tenure in the Assembly.
A spokesman for Vas refused comment after the charges were announced.
