Police are searching Thursday for the vandals responsible for desecrating a cemetery in Pompton Plains.
More than 50 headstones were damaged at the First Reformed Church, which dates back to the 1780s. Many veterans, including a brigadier general and a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient, are buried at the cemetery. Residents say they are disturbed by what happened. Ed Engelbart, who gives tours of the cemetery, says he hopes those responsible are caught and realize how much damage they did.
Police are offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.
