The Union Township Planning Board approved a six-story mixed-use building and public plaza for a busy corner of the township.
The building will be at the intersection of Stuyvesant and Morris avenues. It is the latest addition to Centurion Union Center, a development by Landmark.
The building will have 113 rental apartments, 10,000-square feet of first-floor retail space and 143 structured parking spaces, according to the developer.
It will also include a 24,000-square foot public plaza with outdoor dining and space for community events.
Landmark says it has completed 267 rental homes and nearly 15,000-square feet of occupied retail space under the Centurion Union Center project. At full buildout, the development is expected to include about 472 homes and 45,000-square feet of retail space across six buildings.
The developer says the project is part of a larger effort to revitalize the area by bringing new businesses and infrastructure.
Some in town agreed.
“I think that will help bring in more exposure towards these restaurants and stuff,” said John Alves. “And as long as they make it affordable, I don’t see why not.”
Ruben Hernandez said beautifying the area is a big plus for him.
“The businesses around here getting more clientele,” Hernandez said. “It makes the place up to date, cleaner.”
Others worry that rapid development will add traffic and take away parking in an already crowded area.
“For them to build another building, it creates more of a havoc for people to park as far as the community,” said Rich, of Union. “It benefits more the relatives or the people that’s building that as opposed to the community.”
It is unclear what will happen to the businesses that are currently on the corner.
The developer confirmed the existing buildings will be razed.
News 12 asked the township about the businesses but had not received a response as of Saturday evening.
