Two people were hospitalized after a shooting in Perth Amboy on Thursday night, and police said both are expected to recover.

A uniformed Perth Amboy police officer working near 178 Front St. responded at about 10:05 p.m. after hearing a disturbance nearby, according to the Perth Amboy Police Department.

The officer found a man and a woman, both in their 40s, suffering from gunshot wounds. Responding officers rendered aid until emergency medical personnel arrived. Both victims were taken to a hospital, where they remained on Friday evening.

Police said a preliminary investigation indicates the shooting was not a random act and that the people involved knew each other.

"Our thoughts are with the victims and their families during this difficult time. This act of violence has no place in our community," Mayor Helmin J. Caba said in a statement.

Mayor Caba thanked police, first responders and medical personnel for their response and said the city remains committed to supporting law enforcement and holding those responsible accountable.
