The Transportation Security Administration says it stopped over 1,800 firearms at airport checkpoints nationwide during the third quarter of 2023.
The agency expects to surpass last year's record of 6,542 interceptions by the end of the year. If a passenger brings a firearm to the TSA checkpoint, local law enforcement will be contacted to safely unload and take possession of the firearm.
The passenger may also be arrested or cited, and TSA may impose a civil penalty up to almost $15,000. Passengers who present with a firearm at a security checkpoint will also lose TSA precheck eligibility for five years.
