True Food Kitchen has closed its restaurants in Hackensack and Edison as the restaurant chain restructures under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
The Hackensack restaurant at The Shops at Riverside and the Edison restaurant at Menlo Park Mall closed at the end of business Sunday, according to filings in U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas.
Court records identify the two New Jersey restaurants among 12 locations that closed as the bankruptcy cases began. The company continues to operate 34 restaurants nationwide.
True Food Kitchen and certain affiliates filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Sunday. The company said it is pursuing a court-supervised sale while continuing to operate its remaining restaurants.
The company is asking the bankruptcy court to allow it to reject leases associated with the closed restaurants. Court records identify the Hackensack location as store No. 1038 at The Shops at Riverside and the Edison location as store No. 1044 at Menlo Park Mall.
Oprah Winfrey made an equity investment in True Food Kitchen in 2018 and joined the company's board of directors, the company announced at the time.
True Food Kitchen said the bankruptcy process is intended to strengthen its finances, reduce costs and position the company for long-term operations.
