Tropical Storm Fay caused major flooding and knocked out power to thousands of New Jersey residents Friday.
The storm made landfall near Atlantic City around 5 p.m. but heavy rain started to fall in the state early in the day. The storm also produced strong winds.
Firefighters in Hackensack had to rescue two people and a cat from vehicles that were stranded in floodwater. There was also flooding at the corner of Green and Lodi streets. Vehicles seen in the area did not even attempt to drive through the water.
Over in Hoboken – a city that often sees flooding when it rains heavily – flooding conditions were seen near the ShopRite in town.
Drivers in nearby Jersey City became stuck in flooding rain near Coles Street. Columbus Drive was shut down for most of the day due to heavy rain. Standing water was still in the city by Friday evening.
Further south in Avalon, more cars were stuck in rising floodwater. Similar conditions were reported in Stone Harbor.
In addition to the heavy rain, the strong wind also caused some havoc. Thousands of people lost power when the wind and rain toppled trees and utility poles.
A tree fell on to a house on Emerson Avenue in Teaneck. It was unclear if anyone was hurt.

In Edison, a tree fell onto some power lines on Wood Avenue.
Fay has cleared out from New Jersey, but the effects are expected to be felt over the weekend in the form of rough surf. Weekend beachgoers are advised to be cautious when swimming in the ocean and are reminded to only swim when lifeguards are on duty.
