A trial gets underway Monday against a Middlesex County woman accused of murdering and chopping up her husband three years ago. The prosecution will attempt to prove 34-year-old Melanie McGuire did more than just end her marriage with her husband William. They say she was having an affair with her boss, and had recently purchased a gun. They say the mother of two shot her husband, chopped him up and stuffed his body in three suitcases. Days later, in May of 2004, William's body washed up on the shores of Virginia Beach. Melanie McGuire's attorney says William had threatened to leave Melanie and change his name as a way to avoid paying spousal support. The defense says there are no known witnesses to the murder, no murder weapon has been found and all the evidence is circumstantial. Also, at the time of McGuire?s arrest, the state's Attorney General Peter Harvey suggested someone had to help McGuire with the murder and the disposal of the body. The trial is expected to last several weeks. McGuire is currently out on bail.
