The Mercer Street Food Bank wants to remind citizens their donations are needed year-round.
The annual push for donations usually starts near Thanksgiving and ends before Christmas. With the shaky economy, however, the number of people asking the food bank for aid has gone up by 40 percent.
"The food that we get here today is fabulous, but it will be out of our food bank and in the homes of people in need within a month ? and then what?" says Mercer Street's Phyllis Stoolmacher.
The food bank expects the number of needy families seeking help to continue to rise in the new year.
