Police: Tree falls on to school bus in Tewksbury carrying 10 students, driver
Police say it happened just after 7 a.m. at Fairmont Road East and Addison Drive.
No serious injuries were reported after a large tree fell onto a school bus in Hunterdon County Friday morning.
Tewksbury police say that there were 10 students and a driver on the bus at the time of the crash. Police say it happened just after 7 a.m. at Fairmont Road East and Addison Drive
“My son was waiting. We heard this thunderous crash and then eventually the garbage truck pulled around,” says resident Andrea Foy.
Neighbors tell News 12 that the garbage men ran over to help.
“Thankfully, our garbage men were here, and they ran to the rescue, pulled back the door open and got them out,” says resident Cindy Pello.
“They are the real heroes of today until the first responders got there,” Foy says.
The school district released a statement saying in part, "Due to the excellent skills and calm demeanor of our school bus driver, a potentially disastrous situation was averted and nobody was seriously injured. We wish to extend a heartfelt thank you to our driver as well as the emergency crews and others who helped escort our students off the bus to safety. "
The students and driver were taken to Hunterdon Medical Center for evaluation but were not seriously hurt. All patients have since been released from the hospital, according to police.
The Hunterdon County Road Department is overseeing the tree removal.
