Toms River will pay at least $300,00 to fix ongoing erosion issues at Ortley Beach, News 12 New Jersey has learned.
The township will spend the money to truck in new sand, study the dunes, take out the cliffs, and repair the walkways. This will bring the total spent by Toms River to well over $1 million to make temporary fixes to a problem that began following the federal beach replenishment project five years ago.
The town opened bids to repair the beach on Tuesday. Earle Asphalt of Farmingdale was the lowest bidder at $305,000. Repairs can start within 10 days once the low bid is officially accepted.
Mayor Mo Hill said last week that thanks to the lack of snowfall, there is money left in the budget to cover these emergency repairs. Badge sales dropped in 2022 because of the lack of beach use.
Town leaders will closely monitor the potential of rough surf this weekend and any further erosion.
