(11/06/06) HOBOKEN ? The Intrepid has seen its share of battles, but the decorated warship encountered a new problem Monday in the form of mud.
The Intrepid was scheduled to leave New York for the start of a renovation project in New Jersey. However, the ship?s big move was put on hold after it got stuck in about 17 feet of mud. The U.S. Coast Guard called off the moving operations around 10:30 Monday morning after tug boats failed to dislodge the legendary vessel.
Planners had scheduled Monday for the move because it is the day the tide will reach its highest peak of the year. However, that wasn?t enough to create smooth sailing for the 27,000-ton carrier. A welcome ceremony, complete with fireworks, had been scheduled for the Intrepid?s arrival at Bayonne. Those festivities have been put on hold.
