Tenants at Mott Haven's Mitchel Houses are banding together to provide a proper burial for a baby who was thrown down the building's trash chute.
Neighbors are hanging fliers and going door to door for donations at 225 Willis Ave. They say it's the least they can do after failing to save the girl they now call Baby Mitchel. A janitor found the baby Monday wearing a pink hooded coat and white jumper. Police believe the child was Hispanic and between 2 and 4 months old. A medical examiner is trying to determine whether the infant died before or after being thrown down the trash chute.
Tenants say they don't believe the culprit lives in their close-knit building. Police are asking for the public's help to solve the crime. Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 800-577-TIPS.
