A New Jersey high school teacher is accused of sending sexual emails to a teenage student.
Dr. Donald DeWitt, who lives in Warwick, New York, was arrested Monday. According to the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office, the alleged victim's sister discovered the emails between the 16-year-old student and the 65-year-old DeWitt. The student's mother then contacted authorities.
One 17-year-old senior at Bergen County Academies who had DeWitt for two years says that his anatomy lectures would sometimes make students uncomfortable.
DeWitt was charged with attempted sexual assault, endangering the welfare of a child and criminal sexual contact. He is being held on $300,000 bail at Bergen County Jail.
The school district said in a statement that it is taking the matter seriously and cooperating with police. According to the district's website, DeWitt has been a member of the faculty for 23 years.
There is no word from the school district on DeWitt's current employment status.
