The tables were turned Monday on the jilted Lodi bride who says her husband ran off with her money a month after they were married.
Margaret and Henry Acosta were married in mid-October. Margaret says Henry fled to his native Honduras with nearly $300,000 of her Phen-Phen settlement money. Margaret claims Henry convinced her to put the money into his name because he suggested the award might jeopardize her disability payments and Section 8 rent subsidy.
Henry was charged with theft and theft by deception. But while the judge found probable cause that a crime was committed, he had questions about Margaret?s role after hearing her testimony. The judge called for a probe into Margaret?s settlement money, saying she may have tried to hide the money from HUD and the Social Security Administration.
Margaret?s lawyer says there is no evidence she was trying to defraud the government or hide the money. Meanwhile, Henry is being held in the Bergen County Jail with bail set at $65,000. Margaret?s money has yet to be recovered.
