Some of the best inventions can be solutions to problems people didn’t even know they had.
On a crowded Belmar beach one summer day six years ago, Joe Block noticed that the world was missing something.
“Everybody was lifting their chair to turn towards the sun,” he says.
It was then that the lightning bolt of inspiration struck Block.
“I’m like, beach chair, they have to swivel, just like bar stools,” he says.
And now, thanks to a 52-year-old postal worker, beach chairs do swivel. Block is the inventor of the Orbit Beach Chair. It is the only beach chair on the market where the sitter is able to spin around.
“There’s nothing like it. Utility patented. Trademarked, everything,” Block says.
The Borough of Roosevelt resident says that he has made about 1,000 of the chairs.
“Great for keeping an eye on your children,” says.
The chair is also great for a Jersey Shore pastime – people-watching. The chair allows anyone to discretely turn around to watch many of the characters one may encounter at the beach.
Block has had previous inventions that didn't work out such as a cigarette lighter with a colored flame, women's shoes that convert from high heel to pump. But he says that after five years of design and manufacturing, the Orbit Beach Chair is a winner.
Block even sunk his inheritance from his late father into developing it.
“I always think about him every day,” Block says.
Block’s mother and sister were recruited as partners.
