The state Division of Fish and Wildlife closed portions of several wildlife management areas, including two areas in the Ocean County pinelands, due to high levels of illegal activity and too few conservation police officers to patrol the area.
According to the New Jersey Division of Fish and Game, too many people were gathering in the woods -- swimming, using ATVs and UTVs, and creating unsafe environmental conditions. All of those activities are prohibited.
Two portions of the Greenwood Forest Wildlife Management Area, Parkers Pit between Route 72, Route 539 and Jones Road, and Clay Holes, near Lauries Road and Woodmansie Road, will remain closed until Sept. 15.
Other wildlife areas in the state are also now closed to the public through mid-September in Gloucester, Cumberland, Morris, and Camden counties.
