A suspicious package that forced authorities to close the 800 block of Broad Street in Newark Tuesday afternoon contained a toaster oven, according to officials.
Newark police say that around 4 p.m., officers responded to reports of a bag left on Broad Street between Lafayette and Market streets. The area was closed down for about 45 minutes while bomb technicians investigated the situation.
Police found that the bag contained a toaster oven and was not dangerous. Newark police say that the area was not evacuated due to the incident, contrary to what was reported by media outlet TMZ.
TMZ.com earlier reported that employees at the Prudential Center were evacuated due to the incident, but later retracted that information.
Singers Nick Jonas and Demi Lovato were performing at the Prudential Center Tuesday night. The incident did not impact those performances.
