A police chase in Newark has ended with one suspect dead and five others arrested.
Authorities say several suspects were being pursued by police after allegedly carjacking a silver Jaguar Tuesday morning. Police believe the suspects could be linked to an earlier string of crimes, including a shooting in the city.
During the pursuit, the six suspects jumped out of the stolen car in the area of Hawthorne Avenue and Clinton place. One of the suspects was struck and killed by a police car.
Three other suspects were immediately arrested and two others barricaded themselves inside an abandoned house on West Runyon Avenue.
The Newark Police SWAT team and several local and county law enforcement departments were called in and were able to arrest the remaining two suspects inside the home. The five suspects were taken into custody. Investigators say that they found two handguns inside the Jaguar at the scene.
The names of the suspects have not yet been released. The majority of the suspects appear to be juveniles, according to the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.
One police officer was taken to the hospital for observation.
