A spokesman for the Essex County Prosecutor's Office says a man suspected of fatally shooting an Orange police detective is at large.
According to police, Detective Kieran Shields was shot and killed shortly before midnight Monday while investigating reports of gunfire on Taylor Avenue in Orange. Police say Shields was apparently killed while trying to arrest a suspect.
Detective Shields was brought to UMDNJ Hospital in Newark where he was pronounced dead. The 32-year-old was a five-year veteran and a married father of three. He is the first Orange officer killed in the line of duty since 1999.
