Anyone who has ever worked in a shared workplace environment knows that co-workers often cannot agree on what temperature the office thermostat should be set to.
There are often many complaints of it being too hot or too cold. And now a new study finds that women are typically more productive in the workplace if the thermostat is turned up.
The study, conducted by researchers at an English university, put a group of men and women in a lab and asked them to perform math, verbal and “cognitive reflection tasks.”
The researchers said that women performed better on math and on verbal tasks when the temperature was warmer. They said that it had the opposite effect for men.
The study also found that the temperature changes did not matter for the cognitive tasks for either gender.
The study suggests that workplace productivity in a mixed-gender environment could be increased by setting the thermostat at a higher setting.
