The owner of a popular Bergen County bakery says he is lucky to be alive after a car crashed into the building, pinning him.
The crash happened around 10:40 a.m. at Zadies Bakery on Fair Lawn Avenue in Fair Lawn.
Co-owner Adam Steinberg says that the driver is a regular customer who mistakenly hit the gas pedal instead of the brakes. The driver plowed through a barrier and then through the front glass, landing on the shelves inside.
Steinberg was pinned between the counter and a slicing machine.
“I'm OK. Everyone is OK, no employees were hurt…I only had one customer in the store at the time… So again, thank God no one was hurt,” Steinberg says.
The one customer suffered a minor injury from flying glass.
The driver was issued a summons for careless driving. She and her husband were not hurt.
Steinberg says that this is the third time in 15 or 20 years that someone drove into the shopping center.
