Paterson Mayor Jose Torres has suspended plans to lay off 59 police officers early next month in a cost-cutting maneuver.
The city has learned it is likely to receive $3.7 million in federal stimulus funds to help save police jobs. Torres believes the money should save about 25 of the jobs on the block.
The officers are still set to be laid off Aug. 7. Torres says he's optimistic the jobs not being saved by stimulus may be persevered through further belt-tightening and grant money.
