A Mountain Lakes native was back on the lacrosse field Wednesday night after a yearlong battle with cancer.

Gavin Maute is a junior at Stevens Institute of Technology.

He was diagnosed with stage 4 Hodgkin's lymphoma last July.

Maute underwent 12 rounds of chemo while taking online classes.

"I wanted this to be something kids who are going through cancer can look at and see they can beat their battles and get back to what it is they love," said Maute.

Between his last round of chemo and Wednesday's game, Maute has been training with coaches and Stevens' sports medical staff to get back into shape.
