After the arrest of a volunteer football coach and a 17-year-old student on steroid-related charges, the Hanover Park Regional School District is considering random drug tests for students.
In a weekend raid, 24-year-old Anthony Cuppari, a volunteer coach at Hanover Park High School, and one of his players were rounded up by police. Investigators say Cuppari was making steroids and selling them out of his home. Their arrests have raised questions about steroid use in the district.
The Hanover Park Board of Education is now leaning toward randomly testing its students for drugs. However, at a recent meeting, the head of the district made it clear testing students for steroids is an expense the district cannot afford. Each test costs $175.
The school district will continue talks on the issue. It plans to have a decision in the next few months.
