A group of state senators is working to prevent a future without affordable housing in the Bronx and city.
A coalition of state Senate Democrats and housing officials has drafted a new proposal that members say will provide more affordable housing. The proposal includes rent regulation, inclusionary zoning to build affordable housing in mixed-income neighborhoods and a plan to create affordable homes that require little state help.
The coalition is also calling on the state to repeal the Urstadt Law and return full authority over rent regulation to New York City. Housing officials say once rent regulation is returned to the city there will be more preservation and more development.
