Authorities have released a new video showing a shocking crash during a New Jersey State Police traffic stop on the Atlantic City Expressway.
The crash happened nearly one year ago, but it is only because of a News 12 OPRA request that the video has been released.
The crash happened on Oct. 27, 2023, in Hamilton Township. Video shows a state trooper on the shoulder of the highway when there is the sound of a crash behind him. Chaos then ensues.
Officials say it started as a traffic stop. Several troopers were searching a vehicle when, out of nowhere, a driver coming down the highway plows into all of the cars stopped along the side of the road.
Those who were uninjured immediately realized how serious the incident was. A state police sergeant was knocked out of his vehicle onto the grass. He suffered serious injuries. There were two other victims in the car that started the crash – the driver was pinned.
All the victims were taken to the hospital – the sergeant by helicopter. All of them survived, but officials say that it is a stark reminder of why New Jersey’s Move Over Law exists. The driver who caused the chain reaction crash stayed in the lane closest to the police cars and never moved over.
State police have not released any information on why the driver crashed into the police cruiser or if any charges were filed.
