A woman from Hunterdon County was cheated out of thousands of dollars by a man who she thought was helping her protect her cash, state police say.
Police say an older woman from Alexandria Township first got a pop-up alert on her computer warning her of a virus and instructed her to contact Microsoft and TD Bank Fraud Office. They say a fake bank representative convinced the woman to withdraw $13,000 from her account.
The man posing as a bank representative then convinced the victim that she needed to withdraw the money from her account to protect her bank information, police say. A courier, allegedly part of the security measure, then met the woman at her home to collect the cash.
State police released a sketch of the man they are searching for. The suspect is described as an Asian male, 5'9" and between 30-35 years old with black hair and a black mustache.
Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Criminal Investigation Office at the NJSP Troop 'C' Kingwood Station at 908-996-2864.
