The cause of a wildfire that burned 40 acres of land in Burlington County has been deemed suspicious, according to New Jersey State Police.

Officials say that on Nov. 18 crews were called to a fire near the “Big Rusty” monument in Hainesport. State police say that it appears that the fire was intentionally set.

The New Jersey Forest Fire Service says that the fire threatened 20 homes while it was burning, but no evacuation orders were issued.

Officials say the fire is 100% contained, but crews will remain on the scene “until significant precipitation occurs to ensure public safety. Smoke is expected to remain present until significant rain falls.”

Anyone with any information about the fire is urged to call the state police detective bureau at 609-298-1171.
