The spotted lanternfly feeds on more than 70 different plants, reduces photosynthesis and damages vegetation. The state Department of Agriculture has classified these insects as an invasive species.

The department has teamed up with other state and federal agencies to control the spread of the insect to other areas.
Officials urge New Yorkers to do their part by killing the bug when they spot it. They also say that August is prime hatching season for the invasive insects, and to inspect your bags, clothing, and anywhere where the insects can hide or hitch a ride.
