State grand jury declines to file criminal charges for 2023 fatal police-involved shooting

A state grand jury has declined to file criminal charges in the fatal police-involved shooting in Newark that took place in May 2023.

Officials say police were responding to a double homicide on Johnson Avenue where 27-year-old Wyleek Shaw and 8-year-old Zahmire Lopez were found dead.

Everett Rand was seen leaving the house and dropped something into a nearby dumpster. A semi-automatic handgun was recovered, and a foot pursuit for Rand began.

Officers Steven Ferreira and Ryan Castro fired their weapons after they say Rand was reaching into his waistband to grab what appeared to be a handgun.

Rand was taken to a nearby hospital where he later died.
